OOH...Candy Corn!
Ghosts,goblins, black cats and bats,
Mummies and witches, in tall black hats,
Spooky dark nights, where fears are born,
I'm staying inside with my candy corn.
Ok, so my pathetic attempt at poetry notwithstanding, isn't one of the BEST things about Halloween a cheerful bowl of Candy Corn sitting within easy reach? Love it or hate it, Candy Corn is one of the most recognizable (and TASTY) symbols of Halloween.
According to The National Confectioners Association estimates, 20 million pounds (over 9000 tons) of candy corn are sold annually, and it is a surprisingly low-calorie sweet treat, with each individual corn equaling around 5 calories...however, just like the famous potato chips, who can eat just one?
Candy Corn was first produced by the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia, over a hundred years ago. In 1900, the Goelitz Candy Company, now the Jelly Belly Candy Company, began making these candies, a tradition which continues today. Candy Corn was an instant hit, especially among farmers, it's three stripes of sweet goodness no doubt reminding them of a real kernel of corn.
While today, Candy Corn is mostly made by machine, originally it was made by hand, in a very labor-intensive process. Workers, called stringers, ran back and forth, carrying buckets of different colored molten candy syrup, pouring each color into corn starch molds, giving the candy it's appealing three color signature look.
And guess what? October 30th is NATIONAL CANDY CORN DAY! Maybe we should all start celebrating early! How about getting a fresh bag of Candy Corn to munch on while sending out some Halloween greetings featuring the sweet treat? Ghosts and Goblins and Witches, oh my!
There's a chilly wind blowing, the leaves are falling and it's almost HALLOWEEN! OK, yeah, who am I kidding...I know it's almost two whole months away, and it's finally just a little bit cooler here, but why not start the fun now?
This week, I am working on Halloween costumes for the grandkids, and thinking about how that tradition has been passed down in our family. Rarely, if ever, did my sisters and I get a Halloween costume from the store. My mother made some of the most elaborate and wonderful costumes for us, and we were the envy of all of our friends! Thankfully, we got to share those costumes at school during the annual Halloween Party Parade, because Trick-or-Treating quite often involved snow, heavy coats and awful rubber boots.
If you're looking for the perfect Halloween Greeting, why not hop on over to Greeting Card Universe and check out the excellent selection of spooky, creepy and funny cards. Below are a few fun examples (the first is from a mixed media painting I did last year)...click on any of them to be transported:
